Cutting-edge cleaning products to make the Mining Industry Boom

The Oil and Gas industry is a lifeblood of the Australian economy. Widely renowned for its rich history of technical innovation and resourcefulness, today this exponentially growing industry employs over 19,000 people and accounts for over $30 Billion in annual exports. In November 2018, Australia took over from Qatar to become the largest exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the world.

While oil production has declined in recent years, new discoveries of natural gas reserves and innovative projects in floating LNG, hydraulic fracturing and advanced offshore geotechnical engineering will ensure the continued growth of this important industry as the world makes the transition to cleaner forms of energy.

To guarantee the sustainability of the industry and to strengthen Australia’s position as a world leader in gas production, it is essential that the machinery at our Oil and Gas facilities are operating at maximum capacity and longevity.

This is why Solidus Industries are the Oceania distributor for ZOK International. Their flagship product is ZOK 27, an all in one water based gas turbine compressor cleaner and corrosion inhibitor that is the product of choice for the Oil and Gas industry.

Equally renowned for its powerful, corrosion inhibiting formulation, Solidus Industries’ multi purpose industrial cleaner Zi-400 HD is highly effective in removing residual build-up on heat exchangers, in pipelines and is also an internationally renowned oil spill dispersant.

Mining Equipment

Following extraction at an offshore or onshore rig, the first port of call in any natural gas or LNG production chain is the natural gas processing plant.

Solidus Industries provide revolutionary cleaning products for gas turbine compressors, heat exchangers, pipelines and general plant and equipment to support the maximum efficiency, output and longevity of LNG and natural gas processing facilities.

Mineral Processing Plant & Equipment

Australia’s natural gas transmission pipeline is a vast interconnected network that spans over 29,000km. With increasing investment in unconventional gas exploration and CSG-to-LNG export projects, the efficiency and adaptability of Australia’s natural gas transmission pipeline is now more crucial than ever.

It is no secret that transporting natural gas over such vast distances would not be possible without our natural gas compressor stations.

Solidus Industries supply a range of world-class cleaning solutions to support natural gas compressor stations to operate at maximum efficiency and profitability.

Gas Turbine Compressor Cleaners

Since the emergence of state-of-the-art mega refineries in Asia, coupled with the traditionally prolific production coming out of the USA, Russia, Europe and the Middle East, the oil refining sector has become an extremely competitive global market. For Australia’s remaining oil refineries to stay competitive and continue to supply the domestic market, it is essential that they operate at maximum efficiency, safety and reliability while keeping costs down.

Solidus Industries provide a range of highly specialised cleaning products to ensure that oil refineries maintain peak production levels, while minimising fuel consumption and easily avoidable maintenance costs.

Heat Exchangers

Offshore oil and gas extraction requires remarkable feats of engineering. Today, deepwater drilling technologies allow us to extract valuable natural resources from oil and gas reserves residing at an astonishing 3.5km below sea level.

With over 30% of the world’s oil and gas supply coming from offshore production, the environmental and logistical challenges are well worth the effort.

At Solidus Industries, we supply a range of internationally acclaimed cleaning products to support offshore oil and gas platforms to operate at maximum output and profitability, while maintaining the highest levels of safety and environmental care.

Pipeline Flushing

For many people, the mention of oil spills immediately brings up images of catastrophic environmental disasters. However, well blowouts and sinking oil tankers are not the only situations that call for an effective and environmentally friendly Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD). As industry professionals know, a more common need is to deal with small but persistent oil weeps originating from offshore oil and gas platforms.

Even in areas where there has been no drilling or exploration, it is common for small amounts of oil to seep up into the sea from untapped oil reserves below the seabed. Fortunately the ocean has a microbiological system of breaking up the polluting oil known as bioremediation. The ideal oil spill dispersant will support this natural process in man-made scenarios, while having as little environmental impact as possible.

Solidus Industries’ Zi-400 is an internationally renowned oil spill dispersant. Tested in 2010 against seven other dispersants in the USA, Zi-400 ranked as the most ecologically friendly product in the test, with high profile products such as Corexit and Dispersit found to be moderately and highly toxic to two species of shrimp and small fish respectively.

When sprayed undiluted onto an oil slick via boat or airplane, Zi-400 HD’s colloidal formula coupled with its advanced surfactant technology effectively divides the oil into tiny particles without emulsification, allowing them to float up to be naturally consumed by microbes living at the surface of the water. This ensures rapid and effective bioremediation.

Case Study – Over 99% availability with ZOK

A combined cycle power station operated by Sithe Sterling Energy in upstate New York was responsible for providing electricity to a nearby Oneida manufacturing plant.

With an integrated fitout of a GE Frame 6B gas turbine compressor engine, Zurn HRSG and extraction steam turbine, Sithe estimated that to successfully meet their supply demands they would need to maintain an availability rate of 95.6% and reliability factor of 97.0% of their gas turbine compressor engines.

Thanks to a regular cleaning program using ZOK, their actual results were significantly higher.

Actual Availability Rate Actual Reliability Factor
98.5% 99% Year 1
96.5% 98% Year 2
99.3% 99.9% Year 3

The Power of Preventative Maintenance

Sithe attributed this success to a consistent routine of washing their gas turbine compressor engine to ensure peak performance. An on-line water wash was performed each day the engine was in operation, with ZOK 27 detergent used on alternate days. For on-line hot washes, ZOK would be used for the first 3 minutes of the water wash, followed by a 17 minute rinse. In addition to daily hot washes, Sithe performed a quarterly off-line cold wash with ZOK.

The balance of consistent on-line and off-line washes is the key to success. Sithe experienced this first hand during a period when they ran their gas turbine compressor engine for 201 consecutive days without an off-line wash. Their calculations showed that the gas turbine output had fallen by 5.6% and the heat rate by 2.4%. Following an off-line wash with ZOK 27, the engine’s performance was restored to its original levels.

Thanks to Sithe’s consistent routine of on-line and off-line washing with ZOK 27, readings between quarterly off-line cleans showed only a minimal reduction of output performance (0.4%) and minimal heat rate increases (0.3%).
